   Online Case-Based Learning
Among commercially available online patient case simulation applications, Medantic Technology's eCBL systems truly offer unparalleled levels of realism, interactivity, comprehensive assessment, and performance feedback in a rich multimedia environment. When our eCBL modules are paired with our complementary streaming didactic lectures, our multi-modal platform with built-in Learning Management System (LMS) provides the only integrated "presentation-practice" dual-pedagogy system available today. And to support the instructional effectiveness of the integrated system, we continue to engage in scientific investigation of our systems in partnership with some of the most highly respected Cognitive Psychology researchers from elite academic institutions.

Medulator is our flagship application for the ultimate in online case-based learning (eCBL). Medulator (for "Medical Simulator") is a core component of our popular Medical Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction course (see below) and continues to be our most popular product. Every Medulator case presents a realistic patient encounter which the student must work through iteratively to an accurate diagnosis and effective therapeutic plan. Peer-compared performance evaluation is based upon chosen diagnostic tests and procedures, patient outcomes, diagnostic and therapeutic accuracy, and post-test scores.   Medulator Lite  is our newest eCBL application, designed for event simulations, or for use as a rapid assessment tool. It's flexible case format can be used for individual or multi-disciplinary team training on scenario management. Scenarios can be written easily and rapidly as decision-tree problem sets with scored responses. Like Medulator, case performance is captured and stored, including total case score (with peer comparison), time to completion, and complete click path for case review.

Here's what students and physicians are saying about Medulator:   (Excerpts taken from 2004 - 2005 surveys of medical students and resident housestaff)

•  "I thought that the program was an excellent tool for use by medical students to use during school to not only study for boards, but to also use to retain knowledge that is lost after not using it."
•  "I really liked the interface. The program is easy to use and self-explanatory. I learned a lot and feel that this would be very useful in medical school."
•  "The format for learning is wonderful...Thanks for a great learning opportunity. I think this product is the best one like it that I have seen."
•  "I thought this was a really great learning tool. Not just because of the analogous nature, which I loved, but also the way the program was set up - easy to use, intuitive, etc."
•  "I thoroughly enjoyed these cases. I felt they were challenging, interesting, and forced me to call upon all of my knowledge of medicine."
•  "Interactive, I like the case presentation and physical exam content (heart sounds, etc)"

   Courses by Medantic Technology
Besides creating technologically advanced case simulation platforms, we build complete courses incorporating our didactic presentations and online cases, delivered via custom-built Learning Management Systems.

Medical Response to Weapons of Mass Destruction, A Course on Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Warfare for Healthcare Providers, was the first of its kind following the devastating events of 2001. This Web-based course combines Medantic Technology's didactic presentations and Medulator cases delivered via a custom Learning Management System. Originally published for Medantic Technology by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, the course was co-developed with subject matter expertise provided by The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and certification provided by The Henry Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF). Since its introduction in 2002, the course has collected an impressive list of institutional licensees, including major federal organizations and private healthcare and academic institutions. Click the link below for a full demonstration.
Also new for 2005, all course lectures are available on CD-ROM (see below).

   Digital Asset Management
Digital Asset Management encompasses the tools and processes needed to describe, catalogue, store, search and retrieve your content for re-use and sharing. Medantic Technology has developed an integrated suite of intuitive Web-based tools to accomplish all these tasks, making the content development process more cost-efficient and less time consuming.

The Ontology 2003 DAMS suite includes 3 components that can be used as stand-alone tools but also work seamlessly together:
  • Vocabulary Architect — Describe assets with maximum accuracy and consistency and eliminate the guesswork associated with keyword indexing. With Vocabulary Architect, you build (or we will build for you) a Standard Enterprise Terminology based on the terms and phrases used in your unique content development scheme but mapped to existing standard vocabularies such as the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Or, choose to use one of our ready-to-roll vocabularies.
FEATURES: Rapid hierarchical tree navigation; Choice of source vocabularies (defaults to MeSH); Auto-search for new terms to avoid redundancy; Captures term metadata elements, including definitions and synonyms; Term version handling.  [View Screenshot]
  • Digital Asset Indexer — This content object cataloguing tool is specially designed for multimedia assets (images, audio, video, etc.). Content developers can incorporate the indexer into their workflow, accurately and consistently describing new content as it's created, then storing it into a central repository for later retrieval. The indexer uses the thesaurus built into the library of vocabularies within Vocabulary Architect or, we'll work with you to incorporate your existing vocaublary or term set.
FEATURES: Upload assets to common repository; Multiple term search or terminology browsing modes; Choice of source vocabularies; User preferences settings for asset sorting.  [View Screenshot]
  • Digital Asset Search & Retrieval System — Eliminate the guess-work of keyword searches. Browse a selected standard vocabulary for search terms, or enter unrestricted free text search terms and phrases. Either way, the Digital Asset Search & Retrieval System will match the search terms to the thesaurus built into the library of vocabularies within Vocabulary Architect for highly consistent, and consistently accurate search results.
FEATURES: Dual search modes (terminology browser and free text entry); Automated Boolean match modes; Asset type filters; sorted and paginated search results.  [View Screenshot]
System Requirements: Internet Explorer 4.0+ recommended. No plug-ins or downloads required!

   Knowledge Management
Algorithms are a great way to express knowledge, for example to teach clinical guidelines and any other material that can be configured as a decision tree, as well as to serve as point-of-practice decision support. Medantic Technology has developed an application that allows users to re-format lengthy guidelines and protocols into a rapidly navigable hierarchical algorithmic structure that can be run through a Web browser.

LAMDA (Logical Algorithm Management and Decision-support Application) is probably unlike any knowledge management program you've seen before. But once you've seen it, you may find yourself imagining all sorts of possibilities — from teaching clinical practice guidelines and protocols to situation and patient analysis to point-of-practice decision support. Anything that lends itself to a decision-tree format is doable with the LAMDA architecture (including non-healthcare related knowledge domains). In fact, LAMDA is the same architecture upon which we built  Medulator Lite.

        ADDITIONAL FEATURES:
  • Rapidly navigable algorithmic format
  • Color-coded decision-tree elements
  • Optional information windows for additional resource reference
  • Remote algorithm authoring tools make knowledge engineering fast, easy, and intuitive.
System Requirements: Internet Explorer 4.0+ recommended. No plug-ins or downloads required!
